ELEVATE lead artists act as mentors to mid-career and emerging artists to share skills and understanding through the live development of key sections of the parade.
This year ELEVATE is supporting:
- the development of the parade lead image, which is being created by Ian Broscombe and Emily Wood, Artistic Directors of Cabasa Carnival Arts;
- Vinicus Daumas from Circo Creser who is working with Manchester-based Circus House on a performance piece in one of the city’s square;
- three artists from Kerala, India who are working with Jonny Quick from Whalley Range All-Stars on the Malayan section of the parade.
The programme also includes a series of masterclass workshops in the run up to Manchester Day providing artists with the opportunity to learn key skills in specific outdoor arts disciplines. For 2019, our spring programme covered parade animation through puppetry with Kerith Ogden of Handmade Parade; creating banners and flags with hand-painted designs on silks, led by Ali Pretty of Kinetika; and a workshop on creating sustainable parade pieces without costing the earth, led by Alison Duddle of A Bird in the Hand Theatre
